City and Guilds Level 2 Award in the Safe Application of Pelleted or Granular Pesticides (PA4G / PA4S).

Training Course

This course is designed to comply with the codes of practice required by those involved in the storage, handling and application of pelleted pesticides (slug pellets) by operators using mounted or trailed applicators. Reading and interpretation of written material is required. Numeracy is a necessity in order to calculate dose rates and calibration of equipment. Trainees are encouraged to thoroughly read the course material provided and practice their skills prior to assessment.

Course content: Current legislation relating to pesticide application, understanding of correct type and use of protective clothing, personal hygiene, understanding pesticide labels to ensure protection of operator, the public and the environment. Actions taken to minimise risks to the environment including wind speed, correct settings etc. Understanding the safe operation of the application equipment, including correct calibration, spread pattern and adjustments. Correct understanding of a label identifying and interpretation of it’s content with respect to dose rate, toxicity, etc. Identification of applicator controls and components; relevant pre-start checks to prime mover and applicator. Demonstrate knowledge of pellet flow, action of safe filling and application. Demonstrate knowledge of safety and legal requirements at all times, safe driving, mechanical defects, security of attachment of machinery and of lubrication requirements. Demonstrate knowledge of the control panel and any exterior controls. Knowledge of action to be taken in the event of machinery failure. Select and calculate speed, calculate required output. Check for spread pattern while treating a specific area. Demonstrate knowledge of procedure in the event of blockages. Demonstrate correct and safe field operation of applicator. Post operative checks, safe storage and disposal of all waste – packaging and unused pesticide.

Please note: Trainees must be able to read and interpret product label information. They must also be physically fit and able to carry out the tasks required of the assessment schedule.
